The problem

How can we facilitate better communication to create a safer work environment?

People were receiving to-do items on their mobile device but there was no visibility on when it was sent out nor who was in charge of what item.

Users would often have to go through a middleman to get the needed information, which was inefficient and wasted both time and productivity.

The solution

The problem

Create visibility for delegated tasks to improve transparency and also create accountability
What we came up with was an additional tab on a mobile screen interface that would allow users to see a list of categorized to-do items with summaries attached to them so that they could glean all the information needed at one glance and easily find the ones that pertained to them.

They were also able to see what other to-do items were assigned to fellow co-workers so if they required information on a particular item, they no longer had to go through a middleman; they could see that information themselves.

This created transparency and allowed users to take ownership of their items and finish out their tasks more easily. It also created accountability amongst co-workers since they could now see who was assigned to what.

Conclusion + Lessons Learned

  1. Nothing beats talking to users.

You can do white paper research all you want but truly, there is nothing better than directly talking to your users and learning firsthand what your product does well and what it doesn't. They're the greatest resource of all.

  1. Keep users' camera on.

This sounds kind of like a no-brainer but in my interest to protect user privacy, even though they already consented to being recorded, I turned off interviewees' camera. Now I know it's actually more beneficial to keep them on because there's a lot to be learned from facial expressions and body language as they're going through our product!

  1. When there's a will, there's a way.

Users will find a way to break your design and go in a direction you never even thought possible. And that's good! That means there's still even more improvements to be made for a better experience.

  1. You can definitely quantify qualitative data.

We were doing discovery interviews, which are majority qualitative data, but even so, there's a way to get numerical data out of it! I learned a new analysis method that helped me get more quantitative data out of my interviews and I'm tickled at how easy and fun it was to do and look forward to implementing it more in the future.
